INTACS

Cornea rings are round rings made of PMMA substance which can be inserted inside and near the outer part of the cornea.

They are inserted inside the cornea through special surgery sets and techniques. In this surgery, the ring channels can be formed by using the surgery set of the Intacs device or Femtosecond laser, which is a new system. In both systems, the surgery is performed without touching the vision area in the centre of the cornea. The rings act by applying pressure around the cornea and smoothing this area.

Cornea segments have started to be used for treating low myopia. However, since there is a limited area of use in the eyes with very low myopia and without astigmatism and since LASIK results are more accomplished, their use for myopia treatment is very rare. Today’s actual and very successful area of uses are Keratoconus patients and cornea complications caused by unsuccessful or inaccurate laser surgery.

The rings are designed to form a 150-degree circle when inserted. Rings of different thickness are used. These thicknesses are chosen according to the cornea structure and the condition of keratoconus.

At present, actual indication for the use of Intacs is eyes with keratoconus.

Rings can be inserted vertically, horizontally, or asymmetrically depending on the chosen technique. Fifty percent better vision is achieved in 97% of the patients in FDA studies. One degree and lower eye numbers are obtained in 93% of the patients in FDA studies.

Our studies include over 100 patients and cover more than three years.

According to the study results of three years, patients who started with an average of 3-degree myopia decreased to an average of 1 degree.

The astigmatism values decreased from 4 degrees to an average of 1.5 to 2 degrees in the same study.

Improvement of vision was observed in 95% of the patients with even more than 40% increase of vision in 25% of the patients.

It is generally observed that Intacs results are better than expected in well-evaluated keratoconus patients and that patient satisfaction is more successful than the objective results obtained.

Reactive surgery: It is including topics of laser(excimer laser, femtosecond laser,PRK,lasec ,lasic ) ,cataract(faco,İOL), intraocular lens, hypermetropia surgery, multifocal lens and intracorneal ring (intacs, ferrara). Site contains reactive surgery subjects which have been rapidly developing in Turkey since 1992 and details of this subjects.
